I was playing around with Link Diagnosis tool, pretty decent piece of software, if you ask me (thanks to Wiep). Anyway, I was running some checks on my own sites and those of my direct competitors. Everythink looked well, got some pretty useful intel but just after 12:00 (GMT+1) the tool wasn’t returning any PR. Weird, I thought I might have turned the PR discovery option off so I run it again, same results, PR not found. Opened my browser and was surfing around a bit when it struck me, all website’s PR in my toolbar turned grey. Even Google.com, whis normally is PR10 was displaying as unranked. Call me crazy but I think google is finally updating the toolbar PR. Any others seeing changes?

Update

From FAQ of Link Diagnosis:

Page Rank (PR) isn’t appearing on the site?Make sure that you have the PR setting selected to ON. If the PR setting is set to “off” Page Rank will not appear. Keep in mind that Google doesn’t always display PageRank. Remember too that running reports back to back also gets you temporarily blocked from Google’s PageRank service.

Mistery solved, not an update, just temporary block from google

It’s been awhile since my last post. I have been really busy lately and blogging wasn’t that much a priority. Anyway, I have been working on a new project for Dutch audience, a price comparison website, which should be ready in a week or two. I started already with indexing the domain I want to host the website on in the future, just to have a little kick start when all is ready. Created few text pages with the same internal link structure I’m planning to use. All works fine, I have already started to receive some organic traffic from G. The main project is being hosted on another test domain.

In the past I’ve heard stories that G is indexing the web not only through backlinks but that they also use browser data from users. Well, I can now officially sustain that story. When looking at my server stats I noticed some bot activity on my test domain, which has never been linked and was freshly registered, just to host the developers version of the project. A query in Google amazed me a bit, almost 2,000 pages have been indexed, all without any links to the site. I also checked Google and Yahoo to see if someone accidentally created a link to my test domain, but it was not the case.

Summarizing, I’m pretty happy about this, the amount of indexed pages tells me that the internal link structure and site speed are more than OK. The finished project will host about 6 million pages so the indexing the whole thing was the main issue to make it work. I’m now convinced that it will work just fine.

In a couple of hours I will be heading off to Rotterdam with my wife. This year we have booked a New Years Eve cruise. Actually I have never been to Rotterdam before, a bit to far from where I live in The Netherlands, so I’m quite excited. I hope It will be as we imagine. There should be a live band on board and ncie dinner so all good on paper. Around midnight the boat will be heading off to Scheveningen to check out the annual fireworks show. Anyways…Happy New Year to all of you. May 2010 be even better that 2009. Cheers!

With still 1 day to go I decided it is time to make a short analysis of the market share of search engines in the USA. The total population of this research was 128,417,299 visitors from US, for the period of 01.01.2009 till 12.30.2009. As expected Google is still the most popular search engine used by US residents. According to my results it is even bigger than expected. See the results for yourself.

The conclusion which can be made from above results is that we, webmasters, strongly depend on Google’s traffic. The almost monoply position of Google is rather scary than pleasant.

Take a look at Google’s impressive list of free services they offer at the moment. The company once started as a search engine has evolved into some Microsoft-like corporation. What;s the real reason behind this continous expansion? Well, to cut off the middle man off course. Google is earning billion of dollars from Adwords which they have to share with others via AdSense. By cutting of the middle man there is more for Google itself. Don’t ghet me wrong, I chear up the progress, standing still is like moving backwards but stay true to your core! Instead of investing all that money into pointless services they could do some work to actually improve their search engine.Just my 2 cents

Black hat SEO tactics, also called spamdexing, attempt to redirect search results to particular target pages in a fashion that is against the search engines’ terms of service, whereas white hat methods are generally approved by the search engines. Some of the blackhat SEO tactics include: keyword stuffing, hidden text and links, doorway and cloaked pages, link farming and blog comment spam. (source: wikipedia)

Black Hat SEO are methods of search engine optimization that don’t comply with Google Webmaster Guidelines. In order to clarify this we need to take a closer look at those guidelines. One of those rules is not getting involved in any link schemes.

Your site’s ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. [...]. However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:

Links intended to manipulate PageRank

Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web

Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging (“Link to me and I’ll link to you.”)

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank

Look closer at bullets 1 and 3, do they become familiar to you? Can you honestly say that you don’t violate Google Webmaster Guidelines? I’m 100% sure that every webmaster out there did exchange any links in the past. It’s logic, without those links your website would stay anonymous forever. Without exchanging links there would be no internet, whole concept of it is build on websites linking to each other. A google guy would say that you have to create some relevant content and other websites would link to you for sure. It is true, for maybe 0.0001% of all websites out there. Waiting for natural links is pointless, most of webmasters would not even consider linking to you if you don’t link back to them. Is Google being a hypocrite?
